What is the difference between 3PL and 4PL? What is a control tower?

A first-party logistics provider (1PL) is usually a manufacturer who does not outsource transport and other logistic activities to third parties. Instead, these functions are executed by the company’s departments. A second-party logistics provider (2PL) is an asset-based carrier, who is the actual owner of the means of transportation.

A third-party logistics provider (3PL) produces outsourced or ‘third party’ logistics services to companies, mostly for part or sometimes all of their supply chain management systems. A fourth-party logistics provider (4PL) is an independent, non-asset-based integrator who will gather the resources, helplines, and technology to design, build and run supply chain solutions for clients in need.
